Chiara Boldrini: passion for International Security

GG'18

1. What did you do after Global Governance?

Master of Social Sciences In International Security and Law, University of Southern Denmark

2. What are you doing now?

I just graduated from my Master's studies and I am currently looking for a traineeship.

3. Why did you choose to study International Security and Law at the University of Southern Denmark?

I was always oriented to continue my pathway in the broad area of International Relations, and wanted to pursue my Master Studies abroad. I knew Denmark offers free yet qualified university education, and when I was having a look at the Master programs, I found this Master of Science. I was really Interested In the fact that it comprehends both a political and legal approach. Also, this program is a two-year one, meaning that it would be recognized in Italy as a laurea magistrale.

4. How did your time at Global Governance contribute to your academic and personal development?

I believe my three years at Global Governance gave me the opportunity to discover and develop several skills. Being in such a family and supporting environment was so helpful for working on matters such as public speaking, presentation capabilities, as well as team work and cooperation. The interdisciplinarity of the program, compounded with a constant yet constructive confrontation with my classmates, allowed me to develop critical thinking, to get to know and be confronted with different approaches and perspectives, to be open-minded, and all of this certainly constituted a great asset during my Master studies. But apart from the academic side, Global Governance was a real and genuine personal growth. The program does not only introduce students to different subjects, but it also teaches them the real values of cooperation, of being a team and supporting each other, and I will always be grateful to my classmates.

5. Is there any work/project/challenge you started or overcame thanks to what you learned at GG? if yes, which one and how?

One of the first courses from my Master program required students to prepare for each lecture a short presentation on a subject taken form the news, and if picked up, to comment it in front of the class. I remember when I was reading this on the syllabus I thought "oh well, if this happened three years ago I would never have the confidence and would always try to hide not be picked up". Before Global Governance, I personally had several issues with public speaking, but I can proudly say that GG helped me to overcome my fears.

6. What were the major challenges you faced when you started to study International Security and Law at the University of Southern Denmark?

I think the biggest challenge was the different teaching method that Danish Universities have. During the Bachelor, I was used to have classes every day, while here in Odense, I did have only few hours per week and loads of stuff to read at home. It was quite challenging at the beginning to get used to this new system, but I also believe GG boosted my capacity to quickly learn and adapt to new situations.

7. What is your fondest memory from your time at the University of Southern Denmark or while working at NATO Defense College?

For what concerns university, I would say the "Friday Bar". Here in Denmark is apparently common that every Friday the university hosts a bar in which both student and professors gather to step into the weekend with a beer. I think this relaxes the stressful environment at university.

For the work experience, I would say the International dinners NATO Defense College always organised. Every country had its own stand, and it was amazing to be warmly introduced in their culture by tasting their food and listen to their anecdotes and stories.

8. What advice would you give to a prospective student considering studying there?

I really enjoyed my time at SDU and in Odense. The Master program is very well-structured, the courses are well-taught and the professors highly qualified. Odense is also a very student-friendly city. Only thing: Danish weather can be hard at times, but no worries, sun shines also here :)

9. Which advice would you give to GG alumni about to start a project or a new job?

For sure, as we grow up, we will always encounter more responsibilities, more challenges and difficulties. But I guess GG also taught us not to be afraid to test ourselves and that, even if we might fail, we should learn from it and then be ready to succeed.

10. What is coming next for you?

For the moment I am applying for internships and traineeships. I would like to take a short break with a work experience, and then pursue a PhD.

We are very proud of your achievements Chiara, and we wish you the best of luck for whatever will come next!
